Emma is getFIT615's most beloved team member. She is kind. She is gentle. She listens. She also likes for all of her students to know that they don't have to do anything that her mom says and instead gives them the option to play fetch with her or cuddle in the office.
Emma is a firm believer that you can always run faster. She knows that practicing steady breathing, landing lightly on all four paws, letting your tongue hang loose out the side of your mouth, and pinning your ears back in true "fast-ear" form, are running's most important tips. Emma also believes that sometimes you have to go after a squirrel and sometimes you have to lay on the cool concrete floors for a round or two.
She's been known to lick a face, steal a mat, and cuddle during a plank.
You can follow all of her adventures on Instagram at @readyforEMMAthing... because after-all, she IS ready for anything... most of the time.
Kate - she/her
Kate believes in the power of movement - any kind of movement. Kate rejects diets and diet culture. Kate rejects the idea of exercising to burn calories. Kate rejects the idea of hating your body because of how it looks or for what it can or can’t do. Kate believes in being kind to your body and that we are not our bodies (she believes the same things about our fears, our heartaches, our anger, and our shame). She believes that our bodies are magnificent vessels for who we actually are which is why Kate also believes in the practice of self-work and continuing growth so that we are able to show up with more and more presence in this world.
Blinded by her discomfort in her own body, believing that she just wasn’t enough… also, I’m writing my own bio here! Let’s adjust: I grew up dieting and exercising to burn calories… and then, honestly, I eventually just got tired. There had to be more to life! Well, also, I went through a big break up too. That always helps shake things up. I started to get excited to exercise because I finally started to notice how it made me feel. I started getFIT615 in March of 2014 with one goal in mind: get people to sweat more. getFIT615 was an online outlet that hosted many free events around town with the intention of giving people the opportunity to try new gyms, studios, and new ways of moving their bodies.
The opportunity arose for getFIT615 to move into a brick and mortar in our historic home on Music Row, home to Shakti Power Yoga. Being that I had been calling Shakti Power Yoga home for the past year, it was an absolute "yes!"
I encourage students to love their bodies and appreciate them for all they are. I believe that movement is vital to our well-being and that we should move our bodies in ways that we enjoy with people we love. I believe that our hatred, and lack of understanding and compassion for our bodies lies in the patriarchy, our fatphobic society, and racism. I think that we should always keep unlearning, and growing which is why I love hosting Heartfelt Retreats and the Leadership Retreat via the Duality Project.
My goals are to create a space where anyone can learn to love movement, to teach you to value yourself as something more than a body, and to share my passion for compassion and growth.
My love language is quality time and my core value is authentic connection.
Everyone, every strength and EVERY body is invited to and welcome at getFIT615!
Originally from Winston-Salem, NC, Squeeze landed in Nashville in January 2016 when he started his Masters of Sports Administration at Belmont. It only took him four months to realize that Nashville could be his home once he graduated!
Squeeze is nothing short of sporty… cause… sports! Squeeze played sports all throughout his formative years and continued playing football at both East Carolina University, aka East Cakalacky, as well as Western Carolina University. Post-athletics, Squeeze transferred his love of learning into becoming a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. He’s worked with the Strength and Conditioning departments at East Carolina, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt.
When he’s not working out or teaching at getFIT615, you can find him drawing, cooking, or exploring Nashville. He’s also teaching Aerobic Walking, Exercise and Stress Management, Jog/Run, and Walleyball at Belmont as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Don’t know what Walleyball is? Us either. Squeeze, wanna teach us how to play?!
Barb - she/her
Born Texan, raised Czech, and a Nashville native since 2002, Barb knows how to serve Southern hospitality with Bohemian flair. Growing up spending Sundays in “Dirt Church” with her family on trips canoeing, hiking, biking, climbing, and camping, Barb then branched out into dance, horseback riding, and gymnastics. It wasn’t until high school that she stepped into a gym thanks to a crush — hey, we’ve all been there — and hasn’t looked back since. Ever since, she's explored new kinds of movement from acroyoga to pole dancing to ultrarunning (completing the Bell Ringer 25k in 2017 in the top 10 women).
Graduating from Vanderbilt in Medicine, Health, and Society in May 2017, rigorous courses gave her the groundwork to keep curious about how, where, and why we move; giving her time to organizations like CHAARG and Girls on the Run further fueled her desire to empower women to play and to fall in love with fitness. As an aspiring physical therapist, Barb focuses on moving well and moving often in order to restore balance to the whole person while embracing a healthy relationship to food through intuitive eating. With over 2 years of experience as an ACE-certified group fitness instructor at getFIT615, she embraces everything this gym stands for: inclusivity, intentionality, play, and challenge. Everyone deserves to be healthy, happy, and at peace. And everyone can meet change with a fuck yeah.
Hilary - she/her
Hilary moved to Nashville in July of 2015 with her husband, Bella and Wrigley... their pups. She quickly found a home at Shakti Power Yoga and getFIT615. She completed her yoga teacher training with Shakti’s EmPower School of Yoga in 2016 and felt excited to jump right into teaching. Hilary does one on one personal training (email her at firstname.lastname@example.org to set up a time to meet) and is drawn to group classes because of the way it brings people together. She adores the positive energy and welcoming community that she has connected to at 65 Music Sq. East.
Hilary grew up an athlete. She played college volleyball, and is currently an avid runner. You can find her on Instagram at @gritandglow - why Grit and Glow? Because her goal is to empower students to find their inner toughness, determination and grit to achieve glowing and healthy spirits, minds, bodies and unity!
Jessi - she/her
Jessi started coming to getFIT615 in the spring of 2015. She kept coming back because the workouts were challenging and she loved the community there. So much so that she soon met her now husband a few months later :) Jessi’s favorite part of teaching classes at getFIT615 is connecting with the people who come in and out of that green door.
Jessi believes that getting out of your comfort zone and into your body are really important parts of growth and loving yourself well. Jessi loves bicep curls and boundaries, deadlifts and dogs, and high fives and handstands.
Jessi is also a therapist at Rooted Counseling Center where she works with clients to come the best whole hearted versions of themselves.
Nashville was never on Riki's radar. Belmont University was not on her top list of schools but she applied on a whim and three weeks later decided that Nashville will be her new home. It’s been over two years of being a Nashvillian and there are no plans of leaving anytime soon. Born in St. Louis and raised in Southern Illinois until she was 9, she claims her Midwestern roots although she lived all around Florida 14 years.
Sweating has always been part of Riki’s daily routine. She was brought up playing competitive sports and eventually played basketball for all fours years in college. After graduating, she had a hard time identifying herself as anything other than a basketball player, which is where her love of wellness and fitness was born.
Riki is a teacher and personal trainer at getFIT615 and is an Adjunct Professor at Belmont University where she teaches - you guessed it - Health and Fitness Concepts. When she isn’t at the gym or in a classroom, you can usually find her at home with her sweet family working on projects (channeling her inner Joanna Gaines), at a local coffee shop with a latte and sweet treat in hand, or adventuring through the woods.
Alexis - she/her
Coming from a small rural town in Southeast Missouri, Alexis moved to Nashville in 2015 to pursue a degree at Vanderbilt University. She quickly fell in love with the Nashville community and has proudly called this city home ever since. Alexis is a senior at Vandy, studying neuroscience with plans to begin medical school in the fall of 2019. She loves sharing her love for movement and her energy for life with those around her.
Growing up, Alexis played every sport she could. Her love for movement and community has always been at the center of her life. From long distance races to powerlifting to yoga, she finds her passion for movement always changing and evolving.
Alexis feels connected to getFIT615’s mission to create a community that not only sweats together, but also empowers and inspires each other. She loves learning others through shared coffee, good conversation, and sweaty workouts.
Elly + Hadley
Aren’t they wonderful?!
This Genetic Counselor and movement enthusiast first fell in love with the physical practice of yoga in college. Originally from Cincinnati, Elly has taken yoga with her to Columbus, New York City, Pennsylvania, and finally to Nashville. More than just a personal physical practice, yoga became an avenue to find communities rooted in the pursuit of personal growth. And that is exactly what she found at getFIT615! Elly was immediately drawn to the space at getFIT and the supportive community that fills it.
After taking classes at getFIT615 and experiencing one of Kate and Ruby's Heartfelt retreats, Elly was inspired to complete her Empower School of Yoga teacher training. Elly is dedicated to using the tools she's learned from these experiences to help guide others in movement that makes them feel strong and confident. She believes all movement should put people in touch with their bodies and should be something they want to return to over and over again. She is so thrilled to sweat with y'all!
Hadley is a native Midwesterner - she grew up in Milwaukee, WI and graduated from Winona State University. She made the big move to Nashville three years ago as a member of Teach for America.
Hadley has been around sports all her life, as a former D2 collegiate soccer athlete she now has a total body fitness focus: mind, body and soul. She began working out at getFIT615 about two years ago and couldn't imagine a better community to call home. Hadley has admired how each instructor brings their own personality, energy and motivation and she's so excited to be apart of the team!
Hadley's hobbies include traveling, hiking, the pursuit of the best cup of coffee and all things nourishing.
Jillette - she/her
Jillette grew up in New York, spending most of her time as a touring musician and recording artist. Physical fitness, yoga, and meditation have played a major role in her life, helping sustain her through the unpredictability of a career in the arts. After her move to Nashville in 2016, Jillette stumbled on getFIT615, and immediately became a regular. So much of a regular, in fact, that she is now a proud member of the team. While she’s not busy on the road, or in the studio, she’s happily encouraging sweaty Nashvillians through their morning workout.
LaTonya - she/her
LaTonya N. Shelton, LCSW, RYT is a psychotherapist, yoga and meditation instructor from Nashville, TN. Her journey to yoga began during graduate school as a need to relieve and manage stress. Her practice quickly developed into a transformative experience of healing and growth which provided a foundation to a more loving and gentler relationship with her body (and the world).
LaTonya teaches Restorative yoga and mindfulness meditation and hosts wellness workshops designed to help participants develop a deeper awareness of what she calls “living inside the body”. She encourages this through safely holding space for participants to compassionately observe and explore thoughts, feelings, and sensations that arise during practice.
“I believe mindfulness practice cultivates compassion, kindness, and open-heartedness toward self and others. It is my sincere intention as an instructor to create a safe space for everyone involved with a spirit of respect, warmth, and inclusivity.”
When not instructing class or working with clients at her private counseling practice, Red Jasper Counseling, she’s somewhere vibin’ to smooth jazz with her four-legged son, Solomon Alejandro Shelton, aka “Sollie”.
LaTonya completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training with Kali Yuga Yoga spring 2018.
