Dear Nashville,

Meet Megan Conner! Ain't she pretty!

Megan Conner is a trainer over at Barry's Bootcamp in the Gulch. If you haven't been and have been looking to get your ass-kicked, Barry's is a place you may want to try out. They claim to have "the best workout in the world," but I suppose that's for you to decide ;) You can check out Megan's schedule here - http://www.barrysbootcamp.com/nashville-megan-conner.html

How/when did you first fall in love with the fitness world?

I first fell in love with the fitness world in college.  I started taking kickboxing classes and had such enthusiasm for it that the instructor approached me about being her right-hand gal and then urged me to get certified.  It was over from there!  I got certified for group fitness, kickboxing and spinning and the rest was history.  There is simply nothing like the fitness industry - seeing people change inside and out and becoming better with each and every move, every mile, every bead of sweat… it's truly amazing.

How did you find Barry’s?

Barry's actually found me!  Antonio - the amazing owner - had heard about me through Barry himself from my NYC days and from the music biz. I met with Antonio months before we opened, and the rest is history!

How has Barry’s changed you the most?

Barry's has totally changed my life as a person and a trainer.  The company itself is a brand of it's own - from the gym to the workout…it's incredible, but what has made the most effect on my life is the people.  The people that are involved in the company across the world are amazing instructors and athletes, but even more than that are the clients that come to class.  I have met people that have left a mark forever on my life through BBC.  Some I now call close friends, and others I just watch them come to class after class and change their lives.  BBC has also made me a better trainer as well.  The BBC workout is one of the best workouts I've ever done, and I use a similar format to train my at home clients as well.

Walk us through a typical class of yours.

Haha!  Most people are scared of my classes!!  I think there's a terrible rumor that I'm some hard ass instructor that yells at you and my classes are impossible.  To anyone that thinks that - I challenge you to come to a class!  I promise you will leave feeling amazing and inspired!  As far as a class goes - I AM going to give you the option to do some challenging things.  My theory is - if I don't give you the option to push yourself - you're never going to know what you're capable of.  So, the option is there.  That doesn't mean that you have to do it!  We're all at different levels!  A Barry's class is usually the same format.  We have 20 treadmills, and 20 floor stations.  It's an interval workout going back and forth from the treadmill to the floor.  Depending on what day of the week it is - we do different body parts.  Monday is arms and abs, Tues - legs and butt, Wed - chest and back, Thurs - core, Fri, Sat, Sun - full body.  I like to think out of the box and do different moves, go outside occasionally, and do partner work. Each class is completely different.  Sometimes we do 3 runs, sometimes 5 runs, sometimes our strength training is done on the treadmill like on core day in dynamic mode, which is a really cool feature on our insane Woodway treadmills!  So, each class is completely different depending on the day and what my brain comes up with!

When you’re not teaching, what are you doing?

I've been in the music biz for 8 years since moving here, so I'm usually writing, personal training at my home studio, baking, writing something for my blog, or going for a run!  I just found out that one of the songs I co-wrote is on the next Rascal Flatts album coming out in May, so that's pretty cool news.  :)  I'm also an avid runner so you can usually find me out somewhere along Belmont.

What are some of your favorite places around town?

LULULEMON!!!!!  That's my absolute favorite place to shop.  Pretty much everything I wear from head to toe day in and day out is from Lulu.  I love the guys and gals that work there too.  If I'm in the neighborhood - I'll just stop in and say hi (and try not to buy something although that's a rarity!)  I also love the Red Bicycle - coffee and creeps in Germantown. I sometimes have some of my baked goods for sale there!  And Pieces in Germantown is an awesome little, very well priced boutique.  Tell Ashley I sent ya!  :)

Other than Barry’s, where else do you workout?

I love Shakti Power Yoga!  I think it's a great compliment to running and to BBC.  Hot 26 at Fahrenheit is also wonderful. I also love Krank and Yoked as well - all are awesome workouts. I love taking other classes that aren't BBC to see what else is being done out there and to get inspired.  It's great to go to classes and get some fresh ideas. Other than classes, I go outside, workout at my home studio or go to the Y for a run on rainy days.

Tell us a little bit about your diet…

I've cleaned up my diet a little bit lately.  I'm an eater, and if you read my blog you know I love food - especially sweets!  But, as I'm getting older I've realized I can't quite eat like I used to!  I don't believe in restricting and completely cutting out things from your diet unless you have an allergy, but I do a lot of gluten free stuff because for me I just feel better.  Mainly protein and veggies - PROTEIN AND VEGGIES!!!  Did I mention protein and veggies???  :)  I also am obsessed with Quest bars.  Those have replaced my sweets for the most part. My 2 favs are the chocolate chip cookie dough (which I heat up for 12 seconds in the microwave) and the white chocolate raspberry. Although I DO indulge still.  It's all about balance.  You want to let yourself have what you want in moderation.  Everyone is different and certain foods work better for certain people.  It's just about trying to make good choices, finding a balance and figuring out what works for you.

What else would you like Nashville to know about Barry’s?

Barry's seriously is one of the best workouts out there.  From the gym to the people to the workout to the energy - it's amazing.  I think people are intimidated by it sometimes, and they don't need to be.  ANYONE can come and do this workout.  Even if you can only walk, you will benefit from the workout.  There are modifications for every single move, so if you come and it's your first time or you're injured or just getting back into workout out - just let the instructor know - we can help you throughout the class.

What else would you like Nashville to know about Megan Conner?

As I mentioned above - I'm not this scary instructor that everyone thinks I am.  If you come to my class - you're going to laugh (mostly at me acting like a weirdo) and have a great time, and feel great!  I love this business because it's positive and inspiring.  When my day is done I want people to be able to look back and say "she made a difference in my life."  That's truly what I want my life to be about.  From the music I write and sing to the workouts I give - I'm here to help and leave a positive mark on this crazy world.  I also recently started a blog that I'm getting some great feedback on.  From healthy recipes to fitness advice - it's all there.  I'm having a blast doing it, so make sure to follow and check it out!  http://inspireeatrun.tumblr.com

So go check out a class when you have time (well, when you MAKE time).

Thanks Megan!
