My Dad has been in the hospital since 3/27 with an extremely painful case of Pancreatitis
For those of you who don’t know what your pancreas does, there no shame in that because I didn’t before all of this happened. Your pancreas is an endocrine gland that produces insulin and glucagon, among other hormones, that circulate throughout your blood. It also secretes pancreatic juices that help us digest the proteins, fats and carbohydrates from our foods as well as absorb nutrients into the small intestine… so it’s pretty freaking important! What happens during pancreatitis is that the pancreas becomes inflamed and it’s extremely painful because it stops being able to function properly. You must rest it and allow your body to fight off the inflammation. So Dad was given loads of fluids through an IV. Then after days of extreme pain and zero food, the pain began to subside and dad was given some “real” food, but still liquid food: pureed cream of chicken soup, apple juice from concentrate, 2% milk, orange, green or yellow Jello, and tea with a packet of “real” lemon juice, and two packets of sugar for the tea. Today was his first day of real, solid food: scrambled eggs, a croissant with a packet of Promise margarine and grape jelly, 2% milk and Rice Krispies for breakfast…
In my Dad’s situation, he has suffered from Acute Pancreatitis – that means that so far, this is a one-time deal. He changes his diet and he won’t ever have to go through this again. But if he doesn’t change his diet he will begin suffering from Chronic Pancreatitis, he will be in the ER often and his pancreas will eventually become infected and could kill him.
So here’s how he needs to change his diet in order to completely fix this:
Absolutely no alcohol
Avoid high fat foods – this includes fried foods, most desserts, many dairy produces, butter, creamy salad dressings, fatty cuts of meat…
Absolutely no alcohol… ever
Avoid foods with added sugar – this includes desserts and sweetened beverages
Absolutely no alcohol… EVER!
So my Dad has been in the hospital trying to get healthy for nearly 12 days… he’s feeling better and then, instead of feeding him good, healthy, whole foods that will help his body heal from the shit he’s been putting it through all these years, the feed him the exact opposite of what he should be eating – foods full of fats and sugars! Although, they haven’t been giving him any alcohol. So at least they’re getting one thing right.
I just find it shocking how, with all the evidence that the world has on how important whole plant based foods are to our diet, one place that seemingly isn’t understanding this whole “nutrition” thing, is our hospitals!

There is so much out there that we don’t know, so why don’t we take what we do know, that our food either makes us healthy, or makes us sick, and apply it to our lives and choose to be healthy!
We are what we eat. So choose to be healthy, whole and natural instead of processed, refined and fatty.
What are your thoughts on the situation?
